Howard Perkins

He was raised in northern Arizona where his vistas were the vast sandstone canyonlands and dramatic plateaus. Undoubtedly, the bright and vivid colors of the Great American Southwest have influenced his painting with his strong choice of warm and cool colors. His mother, a watercolorist, recognized Howard’s talent at an early age and while he preferred to spend hours precisely and painstakingly drawing the items in his father’s toolbox, she urged his to paint the landscapes outside their windows.

Upon graduating from Arizona State University, where he majored in Fine Art and Architecture, he joined other artists in opening an art gallery in Old Towne Sacramento, California.

He participated in annual solo and group art exhibitions. In time he established his own successful architectural business and for over 20 year designed large office buildings for technology and communications companies we well as major public buildings throughout Northern California.

Today, Howard lives in the Central Coast town of Pacific Grove, California, where he pursues his first love, a career in fine art, painting the cliffs, coves and ocean in sunlight, wind and fog. His work is at the Venture Gallery in Monterey and numerous private collections throughout the United States.

"My approach to painting draws on my experience as a professional architect… visualizing three dimensional space joins with my training as an artist…to be precise and abstract, to create distance and scale.

"What I like about painting is that it exists for itself, it’s own purpose, with no function other than bringing joy to the viewer who connects with something there. A good painting has enough believability so that the viewer can understand the mystery that he or she will visually fill in. My most successful paintings are those that suggest something without over-defining it.

"Painting outdoors is knowing you are racing the clock because the light is constantly changing. It’s a wonderful feeling when I succeed by capturing that exact moment. Painting in my studio in a controlled environment has the advantages of control and comfort. For company , I have my Standard poodle, Spencer. I pop on some good Hawaiian music, get right at it, and after a few hours we both feel uplifted."
