He knew this was it when he carved his first rock. He enjoys the entire process, from finding the beautiful raw rock to the constant touching, shaping and questioning. "I stand back and walks around the stone, looking to see the form and shape reflecting ideas. Most of the time I end up seeing animals in the stone." Using a hammer and various chisels (he rarely uses power tools), the stone goes through several transformational stages. Eventually the rock magically changes into a suggestive form and then the surface is polished.
Everyone is drawn to touch the subtle grain patterns and colors of these beautiful stones, which are masterpieces of nature before I even lay a chisel to them. No two pieces are alike due to the uniqueness of the raw material. |
