"I feel that drawing is the backbone of all two dimensional works that we create and fortunately I love to draw. It seems that I always gravitate toward figurative compositions. The illusive ones I enjoy the most, where the viewer is drawn into the work asking themselves 'what are they doing or thinking' or their mood. Strangely everyone has a different interpretation. I want the work to be almost mysterious. Starting something without having an idea in mind and watch it develop is such a journey of excitement. When it works, it’s the ultimate in gratification. When it doesn’t’ work I vow to plan things more carefully. One thing I know for sure is that I’ll keep painting no matter what, because the “little inner voice” says this is what I should be doing." -Joyce Valpey
